The Gremminger Law Firm handles a wide variety of civil litigation matters, some white collar matters, and corporate matters, regularly acting as an "outsourced general counsel" to small and mid-size businesses. The law firm specializes in litigation management and evaluation — this is perhaps what it does best — and its clients appreciate the thoughtful analysis and advice. After all those years in government and corporate practice, Steve enjoys the challenges of doing something that is more off the cuff, interesting, and provocative. Clients seem to like the results, which have been impressive. The firm has taken on individuals, corporations, the government and insurance companies, and it has delivered outstanding results.
The Gremminger Law Firm has a very experienced Of Counsel attorney who was formerly a Willkie Farr & Gallagher partner. It also has two very bright, younger associates, including a former prosecutor, who provide valuable services.
Prior to practicing by himself, the principal of the firm, Steven Gremminger, was Associate General Counsel of KPMG LLP for 11 years. At KPMG he was the principal legal advisor for KPMGs nationwide tax practice. He was responsible for all of the civil litigation and regulatory aspects of the tax practice, including the federal civil investigation, more than 150 civil suits, and settlement of more than 200 matters. He handled virtually every type of legal matter at KPMG — from high profile HR and personnel matters, internal investigations, and billing disputes, to suits against the firm involving the audit, consulting and tax practices. He gave business as well as legal advice and was very well respected within the firm and by its outside counsel. His last year at the firm, he administered a $500 million legal budget. Steve participated in over 100 mediations. He also helped engineer a major class action on KPMGs behalf. Steve is expert in evaluating complex accounting and tax malpractice matters. But what he does best is settlement of claims — be they after or before litigation, as part of mediation or on the court house steps.
Steve was personally recruited out of the United States Department of Justice, Tax Division, by the General Counsel of Ernst & Young LLP. He served 13 years at Justice — while there he was awarded 3 Outstanding Attorney awards, as well as the Attorney Generals award. Steve became a Senior Trial Attorney sooner than any other attorney in the history of the Tax Division. He was lead trial attorney for virtually every type of civil tax case while a member of the DOJ. As significant, perhaps, he regularly trained entry level attorneys on trial practice and other matters — and sponsored a very popular internal seminar entitled Dealing with SOBs in Litigation. If there is a SOB in your litigation, Steve is the attorney you want on your side.
While at Ernst & Young, Steve successfully defended a suit by the SEC to take away the licenses of two E&Y auditors. Similarly, while at KPMG he defended several suits involving the KPMG audit practice, with outstanding results — including in one case the complete dismissal of all charges.
Steve handled countless cases while at Justice — including jury and non jury trials in 22 states. He litigated against drug dealers and arms smugglers, with individuals, corporations — and even against the Ku Klux Klan. He tried virtually every kind of civil tax case, from complex refund matters to liens, levies, jeopardy assessments, and summonses. His refund cases included very complicated suits involving issues such as stock options, valuation of bottling companies, retroactivity of tax regulations, and many other topics. He is a very quick study.
Steve has a practical, get it done air about him. He is virtually unflappable, having been through the corporate crisis management wars while at KPMG. If you want an attorney who is eminently fair, bright, and well-versed in a broad spectrum of legal issues to manage your litigation, Steve Gremminger is the right choice.
